An area Boy Scout helped remodel the Grace Lutheran Church as part of his Eagle Scout project.
Armando Gonzalez, of Loraine, has been involved in the Boy Scouts for about six years. As Scouts near the end of their high school and scouting days, they may choose a service project to complete before their 18th birthday to earn Eagle Scout recognition.
Gonzalez said he had participated in activities at Grace Lutheran Church in Snyder in the past and hoped to show his appreciation by working on the church.
“They gave us the opportunity to have some lock-ins there so I decided I wanted to give back,” Gonzalez said.
Over spring break, Gonzalez did yard work, repainted a fence, repainted the eaves under the roof and replaced the flagpole.
Gonzalez then worked nearly every Saturday until the project was done, logging 610 hours. Having completed the project, Gonzalez said he has a feeling of accomplishment and the satisfaction of giving back.
“It makes me very proud I did something for the community,” Gonzalez said. “I had help from some of the Troop No. 27 and Troop No. 100 people and help from some of the people in the community.”
Gonzalez will be awarded his Eagle Scout in June and said he hopes to remain involved with his troop even after he is no longer a Scout.
After high school he hopes to join the military.
“I wanted to do my duty for God and my country,” Gonzalez said.
