A night of silly costumes, chicken tacos and live music swept through the Scurry County Senior Citizens Center Friday night. The celebration honored the center’s volunteers, who dedicate their time and efforts to serving the community throughout the year.

“Tonight is to recognize our volunteers,” senior center director Tammy Quick said. “They are the heartbeat to our senior center, and they’re invaluable to us.”

The event acknowledged each volunteer for the number of cumulative hours they have served over the years, and awards were presented to those who moved up to a new category of hours served from last year.  Quick also took time to recognize the center’s staff, who were credited for their efforts in making the center successful.

“Every successful place is a team, and we couldn’t do this without teamwork,” Quick said.

Following the general volunteer and staff recognition, the center’s top 15 volunteers with the most hours between 2016 and 2017 were recognized. Flower bouquets and certificates were presented to the top volunteers.

“I enjoy the people,” top volunteer Veida Gage said. “Knowing them for a long time is what makes it so special.”

Gage held the highest number of volunteer hours for the year with 1,366½ hours invested at the senior center. The total number of volunteer hours served between 2016-17 was 16,118½.

The 2016-17 top 15 volunteers were Gage (1,366½ hour), Roy Bennett (1,161 hours), Rosa Lee Crow (1,034¾ hours), David Frazier (1,009 hours), Chris Brown (536 hours), Pauline Walton (495 hours), Anna Poe (456½ hours), James Wolf (374 hours), Linda Thompson (369½ hours), Susan Bills (363 hours), Nell Baker (306 hours), Jackie Baldwin (305 hours), Danny Derryberry (299½ hours), Gaynell Cline (289 hours) and Norma Callaway (272 hours).
